A rainscreen facade is a type of building exterior that is designed to protect the structure from water infiltration. It typically consists of an outer layer (the "rainscreen") that is placed over a water-resistant barrier, with a drainage and ventilation system in between. The outer layer can be made of a variety of materials, such as aluminum, fiber cement, or wood, and is typically perforated or ventilated to allow moisture to escape. The goal of this facade system is to keep water from penetrating the building's interior while allowing any moisture that does get in to evaporate and escape, thus protecting the building's structure and improving its energy efficiency.
