A basecoat is a layer of paint or other coating material that is applied to a surface as a foundation for subsequent layers. In the automotive industry they are typically applied to vehicles after the primer coat and before the clearcoat. The primer coating provides color and helps to hide imperfections in the underlying surface. It is usually applied in thin layers and is allowed to dry before the clearcoat is applied. In other applications they may be used as the first layer in a multi-layer coating system, with additional layers applied on top for added protection or decorative purposes.
